Artist's Perspective

The First Surrealism by Randy Dunham
Art Perspective - A Summarization
Randy Dunham's art is a form of focus employing REFLECTION, REFRACTION, and TRANSPARENCY, which transform randomly selected inanimate and industrial shape into a spectacle of wonder and vision. These transformed objects come to life through the mastery of created illusions of transparency and levitation. A dazzling array of color shifts and vibrant accents are incorporated on the surface of these dreamlike art forms. The laws of nature seem reversed, yet are portrayed stunningly in a realistic style that takes the viewer beyond the limits of reality, into vast new dimensions of the fantastically impossible. A new life for the beholder is born via his inspirational message - from a world where time is eternal and space is infinite- leaving a pleasing "after-image" on the soul, the artist's true mark.
How I Got to Surrealism?

I used to paint realistic images-it was a challange for me to paint copies from real life. While I was growing up, I struggled to draw and paint as realistically as possible. My skills steadily grew and I truely enjoyed the challange of painting "better than a camera". During my college years, when I could finally create truely realistic images, I lost interest.

I stayed away from art for years, drawing only occaisionally to pass the time. My family and friends encouraged me to pursue my artistic talent. I knew that I was wasting the talent and skills I had worked to develop, so I started an art business to use my talent. I created realistic artwork that, in time, was no longer a challange; I was bored with my own art. I prayed for the inspiration that would challange my creative abilities. One day, while trying to sell my artwork in an office building, I met a businessman who worked on computers. He was really interested in my artwork, but emphasized that he wanted images from my thoughts and imagination- something new and unique, rather than a copy of reality. I thought I could never paint something that would really suit his interests. He showed me the work from other artists on display in his office, and said "I would like to have something from you own ideas". I left his office lost in thought, asking God to help me find inspiration. Soon, my enthusiasm for creating art returned.

Now my interest and creative challange goes beyond realism, tapping my imagination to create my own version of "reality". My ideas never end, so my excitement and enthusiasm is never lost. My artwork has grown and developed from realism to surrealism, adding abstractions of real objects. I thank God for the inspiration and and the challange which allows me to create this new artwork.
